The Harper Handbook to Literature
Published in Paperback by Addison-Wesley Pub Co (January, 1997)
Average review score:

A great resource for any student of literatureBeginners will love The Harper Handbook. My edition is just over 600 pages, chock-full of information. The handbook alphabetically references terms that relate to literature, from terms you know (metaphor) to those you might not (prosopopoeia). The explanations it gives are concise, but very helpful, often with examples. For example, if the book is discussing pastoral dramas, it gives a list of six plays, with publication dates and playwrights. In the back of the book there is a "Chronology of Literature and World Events" that puts a date on many events in the world, Britain, and the US. There's also an index of people mentioned in handbook entries.

AT LAST -- the TRUTHThis is a wonderful piece of work that finally acknowledges that it was the courage and skill of the UNION (when finally allowed to fight) that won the Civil War and that the whining of the Good ol Boys about being "outnumbered" ect is BUNK!

Narrow Walk (Nikki Sheridan Series, No. 3)
Published in Paperback by Word Publishing (April, 1998)
Average review score:

GREAT CHRISTIAN BOOK THAT SHOWS GOOD VALUES DURING BAD TIMESThis is the first book of the Focus on the Family Series. I absoleutly loved it and would recommend it to the older teen group (14-17). The girl really learns what it means to trust in God and give your heart out to him. Later on, she is faced with a very difficult Christian decision: after getting pregnant, should she give up the baby or have an abortion? This book is great and I am looking forward to seeing more of Shirley Brinkerhoff's books out soon!

Newman and His Age
Published in Hardcover by Christian Classics (November, 1991)
Average review score:

A biography of Newman which never flagsTheologians tell me that this is the ONLY biography of 19th Century English churchman John Henry Newman to read.
The book is long, but uniformly accurate and well prioritized.
For myself, the best part takes Newman from his birth in 1801 through his first religious conversion--to the Evangelistic pattern of the Church of England--in 1816. I have read at least two dozen accounts of "Young man Newman" and Gilley's trumps them all.

Personal memoirs of P. H. Sheridan, general, United States Army
Published in Unknown Binding by Scholarly Press ()

If You Can't Afford the Original 1888 2 Volume Set...These are his own words set in one paperback novel. Gives you a perspective on the war from a leadership position. However, it doesn't have the maps and pictures that the original volumes sported.
Great personal recollections of a man who lead the troops fearlessly in the war.
